Groundwater depletion are major environmental challenges in rapidly growing cities. In semi-arid regions such as Erbil, increasing urbanization and excessive groundwater extraction have significantly affected water sustainability.
Groundwater level decline in the Central Sub-basin of Erbil City has become a serious hydrogeological issue between 2016 and 2022. The study analyzed sixteen monitoring wells and found a general decrease in static groundwater levels due to over-pumping, urban expansion, reduced recharge, and climate impacts. The average depletion reached about 15 meters, while Daratu, Tandura, and Grd Azaban wells showed the highest decline exceeding 40 meters. The results highlight the urgent need for sustainable groundwater management and regulated water use.
