Workshop on Stabilization and Preservation of Choli Minaret in Erbil
Erbil, Thursday, May 8, 2025 – In alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a workshop titled “Stabilization and Preservation of Minaret Choli in Erbil, Iraq” was held at the Rizgari Hall of the College of Engineering. The event was led by Dr. Shoukr Qarani Aziz, Dean of the College, and attended by academic leaders, government officials, the Erbil Municipality, and the Directorate of Antiquities and Heritage.
The workshop reflects core SDG themes, particularly:
• SDG 11 – Protecting cultural heritage as part of sustainable cities and communities
• SDG 4 – Promoting lifelong learning and scientific knowledge-sharing
• SDG 9 – Using modern technology for infrastructure preservation
• SDG 17 – Fostering international partnerships for sustainable development
The Workshop organized in cooperation with Salahaddin University, the College of Engineering, and the Erbil Governorate, the workshop also featured expert contributions from a Czech advisory team, including Professor Karel Pavelka (Czech Technical University) and Petr Vosta (Geoma Art Group).
The session focused on:

1. Scientific techniques for stabilizing and conserving the Choli Minaret
2. Assessing the structure’s condition through a three-tiered methodology using modern digital tools
   In conclusion, participants shared valuable recommendations aimed at safeguarding the cultural landmark for future generations.
